What to expect in a comprehensive Eye examination
Booking your first eye exam or visiting a new Optometry practice can feel like a big unknown. At Ascot Vale Eyecare, we want you to know exactly what to expect before you walk through the door, so there's nothing to feel nervous about.
Rob and Simone, our two Optometrists have over 25 years of combined experience, both trained with a Bachelor of Optometry from the University of Melbourne, and have performed thousands of eye examinations. Every test in your appointment is carried out personally by your optometrist — not handed off to a technician — so you have one dedicated expert guiding you through the entire 30-minute visit, answering questions as you go.
Your visit to our practice, Step by Step
Start with a friendly welcome at the front desk before being brought into the consulting room
Your Optometrist will start with a proper conversation: what's brought you in, any symptoms such as sore or blurry eyes, your general health, and any medications you're taking. This matters more than people realise — we've recently seen patients on medications like Roaccutane and Ozempic experience complex visual side effects they had no idea were connected to their prescription. Our equipment is sensitive enough to pick up these changes, which is exactly why the history and health conversation isn't just a formality.

What to bring to the appointment:
Current glasses, multiple pairs if you have them
Contact lens boxes or a photo
List of current medications
Eyedrops you are using
A supportive family member or friend is welcome

We'll run any extra testing your situation calls for, then finish with a thorough explanation of the results. This may include: your glasses prescription, a lens recommendation suited to your lifestyle, eye drops, or a referral to an appropriate Ophthalmologist if an eye specialist appointment is required. If you do need an Ophthalmologist, we will help arrange this for you to make the process as easy as possible. ​We also report back to your GP, so your whole care team stays in the loop.
After you have completed your routine eye examination, our experienced dispensers will help you choose frames.We know that choosing new glasses should be fun, but can be difficult for all sorts of reasons especially if you can't see well while you are browsing without your current glasses! ​
